Our mission is to educate, inspire, and activate young progressives regardless of party affiliation.
We take pride in being “where Texas began” -- and that is what unites us in our grassroots movement to bring about systematic change at the county and state level. We face a unique set of challenges: in a county where Republicans control almost every aspect of local and state government, our elections are often one-sided contests focused on what’s best for our elected officials and the special interests that contribute to their campaigns. Low turnout and lack of involvement at the most local level of our county’s infrastructure fuels voter apathy: Brazoria County typically sees 5-8% of all registered voters in local contests.
At BCP, we seek to change that. We recruit and nurture young progressives to become representatives of the people in their communities, and we support their aspirations to run for elected office by involving them in the policy-making process firsthand. Our membership is diverse in interests, education, and professional background, but we share the common commitment to learn together and bring more young people into the processes that underpin our democracy.
Our membership is divided geographically into groups by city, giving members the opportunity to see a direct, immediate impact in their hometown. With support from the county movement, these movements initiate acts of service that directly benefit the towns and cities where members work and live, instilling progressive values of mutual responsibility and building safer, stronger communities that benefit everyone.
Progressives and conservatives aren't so different at the end of the day. We both believe in a strong county -- in our economy, our educational system, our families, and our neighborhoods. We both believe in broad prosperity for all citizens. We both believe in a more effective government and that, through mutual responsibility, we can achieve what is best for everyone. We want to work with conservatives towards a better future because progressive values are traditional values.
A common misconception is that our elected officials create the political will of the people, but that just isn't the case. By providing ongoing training and education to our members through our online learning community, we aim to create a viable grassroots campaign that instructs our elected officials about the issues we face in our communities. As a result, politicians are given the choice to respond to the will of the people and held accountable for their actions.
Elections happen often in our communities, and whether an election is held for school board or a general election for national candidates, we are dedicated to building an activated electorate through specific campaigns. The "straight party ticket" mode of thinking is outdated and not in the best interests of our citizens. Through specific campaigns that target proposed legislative actions, we focus more on action than ideology, and we believe that's better for everybody.
Politicians holding office in the Texas legislature are often encumbered with allegiances to special interest groups who donate large amounts of money to their political campaigns. As a result, major corporations create the political will of our county instead of its citizens. We seek to change that by training the next generation of political leaders that live the way we do and hold our self-interests for the betterment of our neighborhoods and communities.
